If you want to get out into the Smokies without committing to a full-day hike, there are a few spots we keep going back to.
These are all easy to moderate, close to Gatlinburg, and worth your time.
Gatlinburg Trail
This one is about as easy as it gets and starts right at the edge of town. It follows the river and is mostly flat, making it great if you just want to stretch your legs without a big climb.
Laurel Falls
Probably one of the most popular short hikes in the area, and for good reason. It’s paved most of the way and leads to a really solid waterfall. Go early if you can — it gets busy.
Kuwohi (Clingmans Dome)
This is the highest point in the Smokies. It’s a short but steep paved walk to the top, and the views are about as wide open as it gets. On clear days, you can see for miles.
Alum Cave (to the bluff)
If you want something a little more interesting but still manageable, hiking up to Alum Cave Bluff is a great option. You don’t have to go all the way to Mount LeConte to enjoy it.
A quick note — the weather can change fast up here, especially at higher elevations. Bring a light layer even if it feels warm in town.
If you’re staying with us at Roaring Bear Cabins, all of these are an easy drive depending on the route you take down the mountain.
